How to discern what notes a singer is singing?

I don't have much trouble matching a note from a single note on a keyboard or guitar. Chords are throwing me off a bit. Since two different people can sound different when singing the same note, and since you can make a note sound different with different tones, how do you guys know what notes a singer is singing?

  • Unless you read music, most people don't know really.

The way most people do it is to find the root note and make adjustments until you match.

If the chord was an A minor for example, you would start on the root note A, and either go up or down in pitch until it matches. Hopefully you know the song well enough to know where the pitch direction will be going.

    Peace, Tony
