What techniques is Daniel Gildenlow using here?

I really like the versatility of Daniel Gildenlows voice, but particularly his mellower tone. How does he achieve it?
Here is a good example of his live performance:

Mellower part comes in the beginning at 0:25 to about 2:35 when he begins to lean into the sound going to the chorus. The other parts that interests me begins at 7:25.

Please help me understand how to achieve this kind of sound.

In the earlier portion, he's using a very natural tone in his voice, and singing in his midrange. He has a relaxed sound, but is maintaining cord closure, even when he goes into head voice, so the timbre is consistent. His support is sufficient for the volume level he is singing. It's a lighter sound, without a lot of air, so it keeps the nice timbre, even when ankle-deep in water. Stays crunchy, even in milk!

When he leans into the sound, the mids convert to call voice, maintaining the cord closure and timbre, and instead of going into head voice, he mostly uses an extended chest sound, as opposed to head voice.
