Differences Between A Bright Tone And A Bad Nasally Tone

Dear KTVA,

The following is a 45-sec demo of mine doing an Indonesian song:



Is this a simple, bright tone or a nasal tone? Sometimes I tend to confuse between the two, and different vocal coaches tend to give different feedbacks and it becomes difficult to notice. How would you all perceive if this is a nice bright tone that resonates from the mask or a highly grating nasal tone?

    No, it's not a grating tone, and it doesn't sound "nasal" to me, even though you are singing "into the mask". You are doing it well, and your tone is pleasing. If you wanted to make it brighter, you could use more cord closure, or reflect the sound more off of the hard surfaces of the vocal tract. You could also make a more intense nasal sound, but that would begin to take it into a less pleasing sound.

    It's a nice balance, and fits the melody of the song.
