Ribcage Expansion Help

So I'm a little bit confused on the concept of ribcage expansion. I know you're supposed to breathe in from the diaphragm and not the chest, but Ken seems to be saying that first you breath in a little air from the chest and maintain it, then start breathing from the belly. Is this right or is there something I'm missing?

That's correct. You keep this reserve tank there. You don't use it to sing out. You use it to keep the ribcage expanded, so that the weight of the ribs aren't pushing air out of your lungs. You keep it there, thorughout many breaths. Then relax for just a second, in-between breaths, and go right back at it.
