Recording Vocals with prerecorded music (karaoke track)

I'm trying to record some covers for auditioning for some local bands. I want to be able to record my vocals, and record (or sync) the backing track. What is the best setup to do this?

Probably a free DAW like Reaper. That will be your main workstation.
You'll also either need a decent USB mic, or an audio interface to connect your standard mic into your PC.
You basically save the audio backing track to your machine, then import it into your DAW.
Once you have it in there, you can practice singing over it till you feel you're ready.
Hit arm for your new track and record your vocals on the new track.
Tweak it, EQ it etc, and that's about it!
