How Does Sam Smith do it?

When Sam hits this G# in the chorus (can I lay by you side). How is he doing it? Is it in his chest voice? Head voice? It sounds so good and not strained.

"Can I lay by ..." is chest and belting. "... your side" is mix with a lot of head to sweeten and soften up the sound. The mix also helps with the large intonation moves that are happening during that part.

BTW it all happens @ 0:53

He's not really all the way into head until the "hooo" (hooty) part of You-hooo.

Sometimes on a part like this a vocalist will allow the vocal break to be heard, because it emulates choking up when you are moved emotionally and your voice kind of falls apart. It's a way to express vulnerability.

We want to be in control of when we do or don't allow the break to happen. It's easy to let it happen. A lot more work to not let it happen.
