i dont understand how to apply the vowel modifications

I need help understanding how to apply the modifications. ive watched all the videos and looked at examples but i still dont get it...
stretching chest voice to me makes no sense, its especially hard for me because when he says to sing it lightly i go into head voice, and because i have a sort of a natural smooth passagio its hard to control when it goes from chest to head. so if im supposed to sing the scale lightly, how do i hold chest voice to stretch it ? and at the point in which i need to use the modifications, exaclty how do i change the vowel? like a direct AH to O (loft vowel) or a mix? im super confused
