Vocal Hemorrhaging

My favorite singer, Maxwell, had to cancel a tour last year due to vocal hemorrhaging. I believe it's also why Adele had to sit out for a while as well. 

Maxwell has an extraordinary voice, but is there something wrong with his technique that led to vocal hemorrhaging?
