Hello, male, 27. I have been singing rock for about a year now and model my vocal style after Joe Elliott. Before I do too much i'd like some expert advice as to if this vocal compression technique is healthy for my throat. A great example would be the 1988 In The Round concert with "rock of ages". He is able to compress nicely and deliver spot on high notes. Is this method utilizing false vocal folds or is it right on the chords themselves? I do not feel pain or tension when I sing this way. Thanks a bunch!

Ken has covered Photograph and if you listen to Ken's version compared to the original version of Photograph you can hear the difference. That difference is huge over time and is why Joe's voice is now trashed. It is shocking how many singers didn't just fade away but were forced to "retire" because their voices were blown. Here is Ken's version:

I also want to add a side by side to James Hetfield of Metallica. James doesn't really have good open throat but he does have proper support and breath control and that makes all the difference in the long run on protecting your voice.
