Confusion about chest vs head exercise in volume 1

Hi folks.
I'm a little confused about the warm up session (lip drill and vowels) in volume 1. From my understanding Ken advices to first do a chest-exercise and then head-exercise. However, in the "aa vowel"-lesson he talks about not starting off with your full timbre, but instead a little softer and work your way up. Does this mean you're allowed to go headvoice even in the first (chest) session? Or keeping chest but in a softer way?
