Does hearing yourself while you sing helps in improving one's voice?

I usually just sing in karaoke's when there's an occasion and never really thought too much about it.
But after I saw Ken Tamplin's videos I got inspired by them. So I bought some cheap but good microphones and headphones, and hence now my question...
Does hearing yourself while you sing helps in improving one's voice?
I setup my computer that I can hear my voice in my headphones. This makes me more comfortable singing and also help me to adjust my voice based from what I hear from microphone to my headphones. Is this an ideal setup? Or should I avoid this?
Thanks in advance.

But for rehearsal I don´t think you need it as long as your voice comes through and the music is low enough so you hear yourself relaxed and clear. Singing through a PA system would be better to train for karaoke/live settings. I myself would rehearse without, unless you are rehearsing to do some recordings. Live and studio can be different. And if you are gonna do some recordings, make sure you have a descent microphone that makes justice to your voice and closed headphones (be careful with feedback if you use open headphones) Good luck now :-)

Recording yourself and listening to the play back is one of the best ways to start improving your singing. The more you do it, the more objective you can be about your voice and start to pick out the things that need improving.

@Wigs I will try to do this. I'm concerned that I get used to hear my voice when I sing that becomes impractical if I sing on a situation that I can't have the same setup.
