Covered vs. Open Vowels

Hello. I recently heard on Youtube of a term called "covered vowels" and that they play an important part in higher ranged singing. May someone explain the difference between covered/open vowels and the application of covered vowels in singing? Any help will be greatly appriciated!

As you go higher you want to shed some weight of the vowel, and this does tend to cover the original vowel, but you dont cover your sound, you stay pure and bright all the way through. The difference being that covering the vowel means you shift the placement a fraction while still sounding like you sing the original vowel, shedding the weight is a more appropriate term. Covering the sound is like you have marbles in your mouth like alot of popular 90's rock bands like Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder used.
