NEW TRACK: The evil Upper Mid-range BITE?

Okay, I've switched out the tracks I had posted for something else:
Mix 1:
Mix 2:
There several places in the Vox track, 1st big one being in the first verse "PICK up your guitar." The "i" in "pick" sounds really harsh to me. 0:28 mark.
Seems like a lot of my recorded performances suffer from "spikes' for want of a better term. Little explosions that happen in the upper-mids that assault the ear drums, and cutting them on a EQ only does so much~! Perhaps you can hear what I'm hearing?
What does it take to correct this problem? Change of technique? Compression? Different mic?
These were done using a Shure SM7b, in case you were wondering...
