You should do it consciously as you sing all the time. Relax your abdominals inbetween breaths and phrases but every note should have support. You'll need more support the higher or more chesty you sing.
If you can shout HEY! like you're calling someone from a distance then you're ok, if you can take a shit with no problem then you're ok, your abdomen is ok. It's more about how you use it, you need to separate the abdominal support from the relaxation response from the throat, keeping the abdominal as tense as the singing requires it while not letting your neck get more tense than necessary to create the notes, this is what you should pay attention to, it's more a mental struggle than physical.
