Trying to improve my singing, need to not gravitate to the melody

Hey everybody! I’m a seasoned musician, trying to improve my singing, but I have a tendency to sing the melody, when I need to be singing a harmony.

Anybody have good advice to work away from this tendency?

Thanks!

Think of the harmony part you're singing as the main melody.

No kidding. After doing this for a while, it's possible to forget the main melody.

Starting out in singing harmony can be really confusing. I sang in a chapel choir as a boy. When my voice started to break, I moved from Treble (i.e. boy soprano) to alto. Hadn't got a clue! Couldn't sing the notes at all! But over the years, you get used to singing the harmonies, and actually I generally prefer harmonies to the main line now.

I've been doing some 4-track recording today. Laid down the bass, tenor, alto, lead Vox and a falsetto within a couple of hours.

I think you've just got to put the time in! Really helps if you can use an app that isolates out the lead vox. For example, Kara Fun is a karaoke app, where you can switch off the lead Vox, and therefore just listen repeatedly to the backing Vox. The more you do it, the better you'll get. Good luck!
