Motown Raspiness

Hello,
Marvin Gaye has a noticable raspiness to his voice that I've also noticed in many other male Motown singers. It doesn't sound like belting to me. Is this a technique or does it have to be in your voice naturally?

i think this might be what Ken calls the matured voice, smokey sound, or something like that. there might even have been a "aged wine" analogy somewhere... i can't remember where exactly but i think in vol 1 he talks about this being an effect of regular singing. probably you would have to add: regular HEALTHY singing.
which i imagine these guys would have done a whole lot of :)
