I would agree with that Bob. I, like many others, have tried a variety of different mics over the years and have settled on an sm86 when performing live. It has so much presence and just seems to make singing a bit more effortless especially when I am pacing myself during a long or demanding set.
Also depends on the voice I think. For my voice (I'm a rocker dramatic soprano kind of a voice) Shure 58 is the best. I have the old one - 25 years or older.

I like the sound of the SM86.
The rest sound muddy on the low end to me.
