Opening up your voice

Hi I have recently been working on my passaggio and I hit a point where I can sing and hum notes but I can't actually use them. For example I can hit A4 and D5 on a good day and can slide easily through the notes in between but I can't open then up and use them in a song. The highest I can sing up to in a song is a somewhat weak D4. Any advice?

Keep training, and keep the throat fully open when doing that training, especially through the passaggio. Songs have a lot more moving parts in them than scales do. That's why scales are great tools to train our voices to get through the passaggio. You will need to train on all of the vowels on scales. Then gradually begin to work through a new song on one vowel, such as the AH vowel. Later you can begin to vary the vowels. But initially you need to take one step at a time to be able to sing an A4 or D5 in a song.

    All the Best!
