question about range

I am a contralo. It plain sucks ass. I would like to be able to sing an octave higher as my starting chest range. is that possible. That would put me in a mid to upper alto. If so, how can this be achieved? I tried it and I think I hurt my throat but when I heard the play back I know that's where would love to be range wise

I am pretty sure the course can help you get there, if you are driven.
When I started, I was barely in the 4th octave, now I'm mid-way in the 5th

Understand that I worked my butt off, not as hard as some on here, but I was pretty consistent at 3 days per week. So even that amount can yield significant results
