How to easily hit high notes with closed vowels?

I have no trouble getting to an A4 in chest voice (no mix) with open vowels. The closed E vowel has been very problematic for me and its affecting my confidence in my voice. It's like whenever I attempt to hit an A4 in chest with the E vowel, 5/10 times I succeed, the rest I fail. I know it's due to a problem with technique cause there are days I pull it off beautifully, while other days it ends in embarrassing voice cracks. It's a matter of improper technique I'm assuming. Can someone help me and describe the proper technique?

PS- I also tend to tense up alot when a note with the E vowel is close, this might be a reason too

Any tips would be appreciated!
