@Michael4000 Inspired me to do this song. This song showcases a bit of my lower notes which I've been practicing for a while.

Excellent! You put a couple of nice little runs in there. My only critique, which is minor, would be that the word "you" at the end of the phrase "falling in love with you" isn't loud enough at times and cannot really be heard over the backing vocals, for example at 1:02. What did you think of my recording of the song?

@Michael4000 Please do critique mine as hard as you can.
    I want to improve too.

@Diego I honestly try to but I usually can't find much to critique on you. And I'm not just saying that, because I have critiqued plenty of people on this forum. As soon as I hear something worthy of critique on one of your recordings, I will certainly mention it.

    Hi @Diego,

I love the way you arranged the harmonies. And man, it is hard to find something to critique.

@victortang I 100% agree with you...not just on Diego's cover here but on doing covers in general. I'm going to try to start doing my own instrumentation because when you use the same backing track as the original artist, you're right, you just get compared to the original artist. It's hard to make a song "yours" with the same backing track as the original. Diego what instruments do play?

BTW I love this Haley Reinhart version of the song, I have heard it many times before.

@victortang I didn't do the whole thing because I didn't think it was very good, LOL. @doc_ramadani @Diego what to do you think?

    I love it!
You should continue! I only know how to play piano. Not that well though, I'm self taught.

    Hi Dudes,

this is a VERY interesting discussion. And I agree, it's hard to own a song if you try to imitate tie original artiest. I like the versions you both presented. Especially victor bringing so many nuances and textures in WITHOUT letting "Al Jarreau" taking over. Victor you have all this nuances, you do not have to overdo this "musical style". These were very interesting.

I think we should be able to do both. Personally I see myself where I still have to "copy" artists to get their techniques in my toolbox. If it is filled you can use the tools to develop your own style.

I think you did a good job, Diego. I am a bit annoyed at the whirling tremolo effect sound that happens whenever the lead vocal sings. It sounds out of place. Vocally you did well.

I can't count the number of times I've heard different people sing this song, and it's commonplace for the singer to just about always "become" Elvis as they sing this one.

BTW, @Michael4000, I liked it, too. Continue it and make your own interpretation. This sounds promising.

Guys, Bob @highmtn is correct. It is so common for someone to "become" Elvis when singing this song...and usually not in a good way. It is ordinary, boring, and unoriginal. This is how I honestly feel about the version I posted. I know that there was a lot of positive feedback, but listening back, it sounds to me like a cheap Elvis knock-off. Diego did it in more of a softer, Freddie Mercury style, which I personally liked. @victortang I really liked your impromptu interpretation. This is real artistry. And I think it finally puts to rest the debate whether you need to do a song in it's original key...YOU DON'T! By the way @victortang F#?? (I think, I'm not near an instrument now) Interesting choice of key. I'm going to start doing more covers at my piano and less with baking tracks.

@victortang Do you prefer playing standing or sitting? How did you choose this key, did you just experiment with different keys until it felt comfortable? Are you actually transposing on the keyboard or are you using the transpose button?

@victortang thanks for all this...great information and I will have to re-read it again later to digest it all. More on the transposing...do you find it difficult to change keys, especially a challenging key like F#? Do you ever just use the transpose button to make it easier on yourself?

@victortang Ok, yes that was what I was asking...and I 100% agree with that reasoning.
