My Singing Journey

This is where I am gonna post my journey of myself singing. Prior to today, the highest I could sing was an A4 in chest voice. I don't know what happened, but today I was able to hit not just a B4 but a C5 in chest voice while doing scales. Unfortunately I was not recording the C5 and could not hit it again after that. But I do have a recording of myself hitting B4. It sounds really bad, but I could not believe that I was able to hit it regardless of how bad it sounded.

I think the really difficult part about doing Freddie is his really good ability to sing on closed vowels like OOH, he has such a clear tone. If you want critique let me ask you a question, on Bohemian Rhapsody when you are doing the parts just before the "Mamaa", do you feel any tension in your throat? Because I feel you are running out of stamina on those parts. Also if you notice, when freddie goes "But now I've gone and thrown it all away" he doesn't really touch as much consonants as you would think, he goes "But NAH AHve GAHn and ThroOOHn( Which is where he's really good at controlling more closed vowels)EHd AHll UHwEHy". He barely touches the "Y" at the end of "away"

Yes I am always open to critique. It's the only way you get better. I do feel tension on those parts but try to reduce it everyday. I didn't realize that he was not using all the consonants. Makes sense b/c I have an easier time hitting high vowels than words with consonants in them.

I don't know if this might help in your journey. But it's a video I watch once in a while to understand his voice better.

@victortang I do a lot of the exercises on Ken's Youtube channel. So I do a lot of the La Ah Ah Ah scales. I do buh buh buh scales, I also do gna gna gna scales. So I think thats what I need to do to build my chest voice. But if you have any other exercises I could use to improve, please do let me know! I really want to improve my resonance though. So anything helps!

I would love to, but unfortunately I am in college rn and am extremely limited on money. Most of my money goes towards food and just keeping myself alive.

I am now back home form uni and have been able to play the piano and sing. It is soooo much harder than just singing.

Dude you are sounding a lot better!
Keep it up. Still strain on those high notes. Work it up slowly. Try to not only do the live version, try and do the studio version too. To show kore versatility.

Nice dude! You're getting a more clear tone now! Work on that Ooh vowel in the chorus. What's your highest chest note right now?

By the way, you really like this live performance huh lol

    Hi @ONIC,

you are definitely getting better. To my opinion you overmodified the AH vowel on Mama a little bit to much. But that might be a matter of taste.

Ya I really do @Diego. My favorite one is actually one the live performance he gave in Frejus 1986. Right now the highest note I can hit reliably is A4. I can hit Bb4 inconsistently but right now it just takes too much effort. I think I was trying to push myself way too quickly to hit the Bb4 so I have decided to be more patient and let my voice get there when it gets there rather than forcing it. When it comes to just hitting notes in Ken's open throat La scales, I can usually hit a B4. I just can't hit that note when singing songs. Then there were the two times I was able to hit C5 while doing his scales, but they did not sound very pretty. At least I hit it though. Regarding the oooh vowels, I have been working on them a lot more since I made that video and they are sounding a lot nicer.

    Thanks for the advice! @doc_ramadani

It has been a while since I posted here. So to update, I really went ham trying to sing, going like 3 hours straight every day. Unfortunately I developed nodules and took a long break. I'm pretty sure they have not gone a way but need to see a doctor to confirm. Anyways, I did some singing today and wanted to post a brief highlight of me hitting a B4. Last time I posted I think I could barely hit an A4 if at all.

    Hi @ONIC,

you progressed again very well. But be sure to check the nodules. If they persist they can lead to a chronic damage of your voice. It is absolutely crucial to have proper singing technique. If you develop nodules again it is likely that you are doing something basic wrong.

    Take care of your voice.

It's been a while and I have unfortunately not been singing much. But recently I have picked it back up a bit. Here is a little demo. I only know the intro which is why it is short.
