Vowels - forming a high O

Hi everybody!
Strangely enough, when singing a high O vowel starting a word, I find it easier to start with an A vowel, and then close it to an O:
It releases the tension in my throat
How come?
I thought it was the other way around, like in UA to reach A - which works fine for me
It seems that you don't always have to reach a closed vowel first in order to hit a high-pitched open vowel...
What are your experiences in that field?
Do you know combinations that work for you?
I have UA to reach A and AO to reach O: what about you?
