Gypsy (Uriah Heep cover) by coffeecrank

I'm really excited for this one... I have listened to and loved this song for a loooong time now. And I even sang it in a band a couple times. :D It's one of those coolest songs by one of the coolest bands of the time, Uriah Heep.

I hope I did them some justice. And yes, harmonies are 100% mine, sung as 3 different tracks.

Backing track could be better quality, but I didn't find a better one for free.

P.S. I realized I forgot the very last "aaaaah" part. Oops. :D

P.P.S. Also tried not to sing too much into the mask and push back, and I think the sound did get much better, so thanks for that advice, guys!

@coffeecrank Don't know this track at all but your voice sounds good and the harmonics we subtle but enought to add presence to very nice cover.

@Vocality This track has a long, long, long, long outro. I dare anyone crazy enough to survive it to the end. :joy: Thanks!

I really wanna do some Led Zeppelin, but that's still on the shelf.

@coffeecrank I would like to try STYX - Too much time on my hands like 70s elo disco feel to the song.

@Vocality Oooh, I sing Styx all the time. Wanna do a duet? :D
  • VocalityVocality 2.0 PRO Posts: 1,289
Last duet i did was 500 miles that would be great

I was just singing it to myself the other day. That is one hell of a catchy song... :D If you have something in particular in mind, let me know! I can even do Renegade. :D

@Vocality Come on, Styx is so much worse. :D And higher!

Oh this is hard for me because I have to admit: I don´t like the song itself :innocent:
So I skipped through the song to find the parts when you are singing :)
Good solid job as always... I think this would sound awesome when you sing it live on stage.

@shining Haha, understandable! My bf hates Led Zeppelin, and I love them. :D It's always a matter of taste and sometimes a matter of memories. Yeah, totally agree on this kicking ass on stage. I quit the band a while ago (we didn't do gigs, and I got super bored with the same repertoire), but eventually I plan to join another one and hopefully do cool covers.

Love this @coffeecrank you did a really good job on it! First time hearing the song but It won't be the last! If you guys sing some Styx then it better be come sail away in the style of Cartman.

Sounds great. Nice mix. Can't really find anything to critique...I can detect your accent a bit (if you care lol)

    Nice!

@Chris82 Haha, yes! Whenever I sing that song, I always think about Cartman. :D

@Michael4000 Yeah, I think some consonants really give it away. I could probably work on it specifically if I ever want to completely get rid of it, but then I never care enough. :D

    Thanks, guys!

I think you sounded great. I just think the vocals are up too loud. Too me that seems more of an evaluation level than where they should be sitting in the mix but you sound great on it as do the harmonies nice work

@sjonrokz4u Yeah, I thought he sounded a bit quieter in the original. :) I always mess up with the volume levels, haha.

I want to ask you something first, did you record this with close back head phones, if so did you cover both ears as you sang with the track playing back in them?
  • coffeecrankcoffeecrank 2.0 PRO Posts: 763
@Wigs I think (from what I googled about "closed-back vs. open-back) that I have closed-back. I got these, just an older model:

As for singing, yeah, I have both ears on if that's what you mean. I have enhanced monitoring on (through software), so I normally hear myself pretty well when I sing.

I just bought a pair Shure srh440 they do the job nicely for me

@Vocality I think I had mine (Sennheiser Momentum) for like 10 years or more... I only replace the cable when it breaks.

Ok cool, because I have recently experienced something weird that I think you might be as well (although I dont know what enhanced monitoring is). During some of your harmonies you were the tiniest bit flat. My recent experience with my latest recordings really brought this to the fore for me and I would listen back and think "I swear my pitch was so much better than this". I started to do a bit of research, and its a common thing, especially if you have the music turned up quite loud while you are recording. So I tried one off (you can turn the music track to the left or right so you dont get any bleed into your mic) to be able to hear my natural voice instead of all through the headphones and viola, my pitch was corrected. I cant remember the term but Ken mentions this in the better pitch videos I think, won't talk about it here though but check it out!

Anyway, aside from that, I can hear especially in your lower register you were pulling back from the mask a bit and it gave you a richer tone, I like it! This is definitely an awesome live song

@Wigs I call it "enhanced" as I put my mic first through the pre-amp (so that's just hardware), then I also put the signal itself (not the recording, but the playback aka what I hear in headphones) through OBS (which is a very powerful streaming software) and apply effects to the vocals live. So I kinda cheat myself on what I hear back (sounds nicer and boosts the monitor volume to high levels), but I actually just record my normal input with no effects. It's weird, I know, but I tend to find it comfortable for singing since my normal monitoring is simply not loud enough. :)

I'll definitely try to play around with it next time, you might be onto something there. :) I also think I particularly went flat on the highest note in the harmonics. It was ridiculously high. :D

Ahh gotcha! So you hear effects but it records dry. Towards the end of my recording session I actually had both phones sitting just above my ear to barely hear the beat of the track because hearing my self through the mic in one ear and my natural voice though the other was making me lose concentration. Its fine for what Im doing here but professionally it might be a problem because in the dry vocal I could hear my mic picking up the head phones.

If you try it out im interested to hear your thoughts.

I’ll bet it’s the effects working against you. If it sounds good dry it’ll sound great with the exf added
  • coffeecrankcoffeecrank 2.0 PRO Posts: 763
@sjonrokz4u Yeah, you might be right. It's mostly the volume levels. I don't wanna crank up pre-amp gain cuz then my mic is distorted in recording, so I might tweak volumes in Windows playback if there's a setting for that.

@coffeecrank Loved this, and I did listen to the end. I don’t know the original, but your version was cool.

@coffeecrank and @Vocality Styx is one of my favorite bands. Would love to make it a duet or trio on any of their songs. I have the backing track for Too Much Time On My Hands and Come Sail Away. I can play the piano part on Come Sail Away until it gets to be an organ sound. Let me know. Sounds like fun.

@Mysti We should do Come Sail Away, but George has something else on his mind right now, hehe. But after that we can totally do Come Sail Away! It's a fun song for sure. We should also do harmonies.

@coffeecrank We can do both! Will message you and @Vocality George.
