Playing guitar in my tone of voice

Hello, I'm not too sure if this is the right place to ask this. I have a capo and not to sure where to put it on the guitar in accordance to my voice. I think if i practice with a capo it will put less strain on me vocally as i increase my pitch and range through exercises. Any help where i can determine where may the capo be placed on the guitar or how can i find it on the fretboard.

    I might be wrong (I'm not a guitarist) but I thought a capo is for changing the key of what it's tuned to so when you play you don't need to change your finger placements? You can still play your normal chords upto where you normally would in your exercises without one.
