here is her audtion video for the voice australia.

I am wondering about her style. She clearly doesn't talk like this so how does she get this affected style? Does singing like that damage your vocal cords over time?

I think it my lower register I can have sort of a Stevie Nicks affect but is this because of poor technique?

I feel that my voice and tone is pretty clear and good now but I don't think I have a style. How do you get a style?

Do you just experiment copying other singer's styles?

I tend to do songs by Whitney Houston, Pat Benetar, and Neon Trees pretty well.

it sounds to me like she is using a little vocal fry, or creaking in the lower range.  Its not harmful to the voice, and can feel quite relaxing if done correctly.  You can add it into the voice as an effect use when you like.  To get it, you can sing a comfortable note in chest voice, and keep backing off of the volume until you get that croaking type of sound.  It is done at a very quiet level at first, and then you can add more volume in as you progress.  Give it a try and see if thats what you are looking for.

as far as getting "style", we are a product of our influences.  naturally you are going to copy the sounds that you like. Personally i like raspy gravelly type singers, so i i tend to lean towards that in my sound.  remember that if something hurts, or causes discomfort, you are not doing it correctly.

To me, her pronunciation and placement sounds almost like a lady Leon Redbone, very exaggerated and affected... then she sounds almost like Janis Joplin for a moment when she really opens up.

Very interesting and soulful.  Conveys a lot of emotion when the frequencies of the voice and melody match the sound someone crying their heart out.

@sspatrick  ok thanks. i have done the vocal fry type exercises before so i will try it in a few phrases. I don't really know if i would like it with my voice but thought i would try it. it seems like i have been focused so much on developing my voice as in tone, pitch, connecting, support, breath control that i haven't really done anything with style. I think it is time to listen to some of the more unusual voices and styles and try some things.

@highmtn  yes she did say that janis was a huge influence. she ended up winning the contest and has a cd out. She really improved since that demo too. :) I like posting those demos like that without a bunch of ribbons and bows in digital effects as they are so real.

I actually like her (though her vibrato on the Adele piece was so wide you could throw a cat through it ha ha...

Seriously though, Patrick is correct on the fry part except she starts to push a lot of air across the cords and then closes the glottis down too hard.

Over time this could be e recipe for nodes.

Let me give you and example: I LOVE Susan Tedeschi: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xigwtXcrXBA and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88LNk-_Tfr8

With that said, I like her tone so much that I just "look the other way" (like I do with Janis Joplin) however when you here her on this:

She obviously can control it... this is the fine line and tightrope we walk to get this kind of hyper compression
